DKNY makes its Middle Eastern debut for the holy month of Ramadan by unveiling its halal couture. Inspired by celebrations of the holy month, the collection’s bold colors and prints are designed to reflect the daily fasting period with deep blue hues and vibrant oranges, alongside simpler monochrome pieces.
The Ramadan Summer 2014 collection is styled by two Middle Eastern women, Yada Golsharifi, fashion editor of Styles Magazine and Tamara Al Gabbani, a fashion designer based in Dubai.
The 12-piece capsule collection includes summer staples with a conservative yet modern twist — like bright maxi dresses, printed tops, floor-length skirts and classic black-and-white separates. Pakistani writer Bina Shah for The Independent said the clothes “walk the fine line between cosmopolitan and conservative, luxurious and ostentatious.”
A smart move on the company’s part was to hire Muslim women to style their debut Ramadan couture as these women are deemed to be professionals in their fields and are aware of the contexts and cultural requirements of the target audience for this collection. Everything is DKNY’s Ramadan collection is beautiful and halal.
The collection is an indication of the brand’s growth into Arab nations. Most recently, DKNY launched a Middle East website and opened several stores in Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
